How to use "Mobile Internet in Roaming" service?
Before travelling it is nessesary for you to check up if the "Mobile Internet in roaming" service is provided in the country you are going to since the opportunity to use the Mobile Internet is provided not by MTS roaming partners.
There is no necessity to change settings of the Mobile Internet services in your mobile phone, modem or other equipment.
Before travelling abroad check up:
-
-
-
the positive account balance;
-
the mobile terminal (mobile phone, USB modem) supporting the corresponding GPRS/ WAP service;
-
whether the mobile terminal (mobile phone, USB modem) works in the same frequency range that the guest network;
-
whether the guest network provides with the opportunity of GPRS roaming;
-
For viewing the countries and operators where the Mobile Internet is accessible go to the page of the Roaming-Atlas page.
Notice that the software of the most modern telephone models can automatically, without your direct participation, initiate Internet connections (for example, updating of the phone software or automatic receipt of MMS messages, as well as updating of the applications working by means of the Internet which are installed on the mobile terminal, such as: weather forecast, exchange rates, online games, ICQ, etc.). Remember that tariffication of such connections abroad is made according to tariffs of the international roaming.
Attention!
Being on holiday or away on business outside Ukraine, remember that tariffs on data transfer services under the coverage of the international roaming will differ from the tariffs of the home network, and the minimum tariffication portion will make 100 KB.
If you are in the countries where the 3G network of the roaming partner is accessible, remember that the data transfer rate in the 3G networks is much higher, and consumption of the Internet traffic can cause the charges not planned by you. When checking the account balance it is important to remember that all events accomplished in roaming are reflected on the account balance not immediately after end of the event, but with a delay which can reach several days.
Conditions of Mobile Internet provision in 3G networks of roaming partners
Due to the conclusion of contracts with the operators working in the 3G networks, MTS Contract subscribers can use the service of batch data transfer with higher rates and get thereby better services. As a rule, the 3G networks are the networks working in UMTS ( W-CDMA) standard. However, among the roaming partners of MTS Ukraine there are operators providing services of 3-rd generation in the standards differing from UMTS.
3G roaming is meant as the opportunity of MTS Ukraine subscribers to use the Mobile Internet by means of high rate of batch data transfer( GPRS/ EDGE, HSDPA (HSUPA), HSPA+) in the 3G UMTS networks of the roaming partners.
Note that the service of the Video Call is not rendered to MTS Ukraine subscribers.
In the 3G networks higher data transfer rates will be accessible to you, at the same time you will not have to pay extra for this opportunity as the cost of the transferred/accepted data in the 3G networks will be equivalent to the cost for GPRS/ EDGE in roaming. For example, the cost of the transferred/accepted data of 100 KB in roaming will be identical both at use of 3G technologies and at use of GPRS/ EDGE technologies.
The data transfer rate in UMTS 3G network of the roaming partner reaches 384 Kbit/s in case of use of GPRS R99, and with application of HSDPA technologies in the network of the roaming partner it is possible to expect the data transfer rate up to 3.6 Mbit/s, and for HSPA+ technologies the rate speed makes up to 70 Mbit/s. In practice it means that MTS subscribers in the 3G network of the roaming partner:
Important: The user's terminal (phone, USB modem, PC card, etc.) should support the standards of the guest network. To check the standard in which operators in the country of your interest work, go to the Roaming-Atlas page.
To use the Mobile Internet services in the 3G networks of the roaming partners the following is necessary:
-
A mobile phone or a modem with UMTS (HSPA). (Some manufacturers specify not UMTS but W-CDMA in the documentation to the equipment);
-
-
-
Being within the coverage of the 3G network of the roaming partner. When being within the coverage of the 3G network, as a rule, “3G” or “UMTS” sign appears on the phone display;
-
3G phone/modem should be adjusted to use both networks of 2G( GSM)/ 3G ( UMTS/W-CDMA)(according to the instruction to the device/modem by change of the settings through the menu of the mobile phone);
-
The mobile phone or other device works in the same frequency range that the guest network;
-
The guest network affords the opportunity of GPRS roaming and provides the services of the 3rd generation.
To view the roaming operators in which networks GPRS and 3G roaming services are accessible go to the Roaming Atlas page.
At registration in the 3G networks of the foreign operators which are roaming partners, the tariffs of the international roaming will be valid. The cost of the Mobile Internet via the high rate data transfer (3G) in the networks of 3G roaming partners is similar to the cost of the service of GPRS in roaming, the minimum tariffication portion makes 100 KB, in case of Blackberry service use the minimum tariffication portion is equal to 1 KB.
Note that some modern telephone models can automatically initiate the Internet connection (for example, updating of the phone software or automatic receipt of MMS messages, as well as applications working by means of the Internet which are installed on the mobile terminal, such as weather forecast, currency rates, online games, ICQ, etc.). Remember that tariffication of such connections abroad is made according to the roaming tariffs.

When checking the account balance it is important to remember, that all events accomplished in roaming are reflected on the account balance not immediately after end of the event, but with a delay which can reach several days
The data transfer rate in the 3G networks of the roaming partners is dependent on the technologies used in the 3G network of the roaming partner.
Note for smartphone owners
It is necessary for the owners of mobile phones and devices powered by operational systems iOS (iPhone OS), Android OS, Symbian OS, Windows Phone 7 OS, Bada OS, MeeGo, BlackBerry OS (hereinafter referred to as smartphones) when being in roaming to pay special attention to the fact that the software installed on these devices by the manufacturer or by the user itself can independently initiate sessions of the mobile Internet access in GPRS/EDGE/3G networks, for example, to update web sites or update applications versions. As a rule, these are various chats, social networks, Travel Mate, e-mail, maps, weather forecast, exchange rates, stock quotes and many other things. While such sessions pass in the home networks unnoticed for the user in view of low cost of data transfer services, such sessions in roaming will be paid according to the roaming tariffs.
In order to prevent unexpected expenses for mobile Internet services (GPRS/EDGE/3G) it is recommended to turn off functions of automatic updating of your smartphone software. Instructions on turning the automatic update off may be contained in the help menus of the software installed on your smartphone. If turning off the software automatic updating is impossible you can use the function of data transfer lock on your smartphone, or remove applications which can be updated automatically. You can get more specific information how to lock the data transfer on the site of the manufacturer, or in the instruction to your smartphone. MTS Ukraine PrJSC is not responsible for the software installed on the subscriber’s equipment by the manufacturer or directly by the user.
Note for all owners of mobile phones and devices enabling to receive and transfer MMS messages
With the purpose of minimization of charges in roaming you can disconnect the option “Automatic receipt” or “Receive always” and set the option to receive “On request” or "Manual" receipt in the settings of MMS messages of your mobile phone, or device. In this case, before loading MMS, the phone will make a request for MMS receipt, and only after your confirmation there will be MMS loading.
The detailed information how to turn off the automatic receipt of MMS messages may be contained in the instructions to your phone.
WHAT DATA TRANSFER RATES ARE ACCESSIBLE IN ROAMING?
The data transfer rate in roaming (the speed of the mobile Internet) depends on a number of factors: used technology of radio signal transmission by an operator which is a roaming partner, the quantity of users in the specific geographical location, the distance between the transmitting antenna and the subscriber’s terminal, the speed of the user’s movement. At use of GPRS/EDGE technologies by the partner to provide the mobile Internet services, the data transfer rate can reach 236 Kbit/s. The data transfer rate in the network of the roaming partner using 3D technologies to provide the mobile Internet services can reach 384 Kbit/s, and with utilization of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology it is possible to expect the rate up to 3.6 Mbit/s. Some networks of the roaming partners support HSDPA technology which enables to reach the rate up to 7.2 Mbit/s, and individual roaming partners have developed HSPA + (High Speed Packet Access) technology in their networks, and the data transfer rate in those networks can reach 14.4 Mbit/s.
