Watch Out for Mobile Swindlers!

Ensuring the economic safety of both the company and our subscribers we are often facing the cases of takeover of funds from the subscribers’ accounts by fraudulent means. Recently the increasing number of MTS subscribers has been reporting to us that they’ve suffered from mobile swindlers.

Despite the diversity and ingenuity of swindlers all the plots used by them can be grouped in several typical schemes. We have prepared the list of such schemes so that to demonstrate how to detect the signs of swindle as well as to explain what has to be done and what not when facing doubtful proposals.

GET TWICE AS MUCH

A subscriber receives an SMS with the following text: ”Server of X mobile operator. Transfer the funds to number 8-ÕÕÕ-ÕÕÕ-ÕÕ-ÕÕ and you’ll get twice as much!”

Important! The mobile operator never conducts the offers requesting to transfer the funds from one mobile number to another as one of their conditions.

NO MORE ADVERTISEMENT

A subscriber receives an SMS proposing to sign out from SMS advertising mailing. In order to sign out you have to send the so-called “free” SMS to one of the short numbers. The SMS appears to be a paid one.

Important! Pay attention to the number from which such SMS has been sent. If it is unknown to you it is already the sufficient reason to call the operator and clear up the details regarding the offered possibility. You have to remember that swindlers can use the SMS mailing service via the Internet and substitute any name in the sender’s field.

SAVE A CHILD

A subscriber receives a message from unknown number informing of the necessity to urgently find a rare blood group for saving a child. The message also contains the phone number calls to which automatically deplete the caller’s account.

Important! The unknown number has to put you on the alert and make think once more whether your funds will be delivered to the right address.

TROUBLESHOOTING

A caller, under the pretense of network fault, asks a subscriber to dial a certain sequence of digits and symbols which appear to be the command to transfer the funds.

Important! Any information received from unknown persons needs checking. Connect with your mobile operator free of charge at 111.

MAY I MAKE A CALL?

In the street a passer-by approaches you asking to let him call his ill mother or children waiting at home on the grounds of his phone’s battery being empty and ultimate urgency of the call. As a result, the call from your phone is made to a paid number.

Important! A person asking you to make a call from your phone can be in a difficult situation indeed. Still, tell such person in the softest possible way that you intend to check your account status shortly after the call. If you’ve come across a swindler such intention of yours should surely frighten him away.

NEED A JOB?

You see an announcement offering you a top-paying job. For more details you are proposed to send an SMS or call a short number and if you do so the certain amount of funds will be withdrawn from your account of which fact in the announcement was made no mention.

Important! Pay attention to the information regarding the cost of a call or SMS. If such information is not available be prepared that the cost may appear to be higher than usual.

SEND SOME MONEY

A subscriber receives the following SMS: “Cannot call you, short of money, send me 5 hryvnias”. It is needless to say that nobody calls you back from this number.

Important! Usually such messages can be sent by the closest to you people only like friends or relatives. Unknown number should alert you and make you think whether your funds will be delivered to the right address.

RETURN MY MONEY

A subscriber receives an SMS informing him that somebody transferred a certain amount of money to his account. Several minutes later another SMS is received informing of an error and requesting to return the money back.

Important! Check out whether your account balance has been changed. If you do not remember it you can always call the operator and clarify if there have been any account recharges during a day.

YOU HAVE WON!

A subscriber gets an SMS from the unknown number or Internet (number 1010) telling him that he has won some valuable prize. To get the prize a subscriber has to buy a recharge voucher within the established period of time and notify the voucher activation code to the specified number. In other cases with the “YOU HAVE WON!” scheme a subscriber can receive a call from a DJ at some radio station or call-center operator.

Important! If you are not able to check the conditions of the offer at the web-site you can always get the required information at free number 111.

OUTSTANDING LOAN

A subscriber receives an SMS with the following content: “Bank Õ rejected your loan application”. Several days later when the subscriber already forgot about this message he gets a call from the unknown number. The answering machine speaks on behalf of Bank X: “We’d like to remind you of the necessity to repay the loan. If you want to listen to this message again, press 1. If you want to get in touch with the operator, press 2”. It is naturally that the subscriber gets in touch with the operator who in a very realistic way describes the situation with the outstanding loan. For further details the so-called “operator” suggests connecting the subscriber with the bank’s security department which primary task in fact will be to make the frightened subscriber disclose various sort of personal information, numbers of credit cards etc. Following this conversation it is not surprising at all that the money from such credit cards begin to disappear.

Important! In no circumstances disclose your personal details to anyone. Ask the people calling you to give you maximum information of the bank such as phone numbers, address, and contact details. And you definitely have to check this information in open sources.

GET CONNECTED AND RECEIVE 100 UAH!

For some money reward you are offered to get connected to mobile communication services on a contractual basis. Swindlers promise you that they will assume all contractual obligations and pay all bills in a timely manner. Some time later you receive a bill for roaming for a very large amount of money.

Important! Never enter into contracts in your own name for unknown third parties as pursuant to the effective legislation you assume full legal responsibility for all the documents that you sign.

HOW NOT TO SWALLOW THE MOBILE SWINDLERS’ BAIT?

We on our part are by all means trying to prevent the cases of swindle ensuring the protection of our subscribers. However, we recommend observing some simple rules below:

  • Awareness;
  • Attention to details;
  • Rational mind;
  • Countercheck;
  • Operator is always ready to provide support.

Do not disclose your personal information to unknown people. Never disclose the secret codes of recharge vouchers. Do not transfer your SIM cards or Internet modems to third parties for reward since they may be also used by swindlers.

Be aware toward numbers from which you receive calls on behalf of MTS. MTS and its representatives may call subscribers but only to inform them of new services and offers.
